The debut album by Baltimore-born, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Dillon O\'Brian is completely out of time. This kind of piano-based soft rock really should have come out on Asylum in the mid-\'70s, in between albums by Judee Sill and Warren Zevon. O\'Brian, who has written songs for Bonnie Raitt and others, is a gifted melodicist with a taste for introspective, autobiographical lyrics. The youngest of seven children and a devout Irish Catholic, O\'Brian mines his own life for material, from \"My Father\'s Son,\" about his parents\' emigration to the United States, to the self-explanatory \"Catholic Boys.\" The religious imagery is spread on a little thick at times, right down to the liner notes, and the production might be a little too \'70s slick for some tastes, but the songs, from the Jackson Browne-like \"Angel of Mercy\" to the jazzy closer \"The Analytical Mind,\" which recalls Tom Waits\' early work, are a uniformly strong lot. ~ Stewart Mason
