Giacomo Carissimi (1605–1674) was one of the most prolific 17th-century Italian composers of church music and a master of the Latin oratorio form. Writing during the Early Baroque era, Carissimi combined deep religious devotion with expressive dramatic realizations of original biblical texts, establishing the vocal and narrative possibilities of sacred choral music.
