Ronnie Montrose’s 1978 solo debut, released after his work fronting the band Montrose with Sammy Hagar.

Open Fire is an all-instrumental set blending hard rock, jazz fusion, and acoustic textures, in the vein of Jeff Beck’s Blow by Blow. Highlights include the title track, “Leo Rising,” “No Beginning/No End,” and a guitar-driven cover of the standard “Town Without Pity.”

This is an original US first pressing on Warner Bros. Records, BSK 3134, pressed at Capitol Jacksonville.

The first lacquers (JW1) carry a RE-1 designation on both sides — standard for this release. All three original US pressing plant variants of BSK 3134 (WW-Winchester, W- Los Angeles and JW- Jacksonville) were cut from RE-1, so this is the original 1st lacquer generation for the 1978 first pressing run, not a reissue, recut or repress.

Mastered at A&M, Hollywood. A&M’s Hollywood complex, founded by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss in the former Charlie Chaplin Studios, was a major mastering and recording facility used across multiple genres throughout the 1970s and ’80s.

Produced by Edgar Winter, who also contributes piano, harpsichord, and synthesizer across several tracks.

Winter and Montrose had already worked together by this point — Montrose played guitar on the Edgar Winter Group’s “They Only Come Out at Night,” home to “Frankenstein.”

Front cover features a striking circuit-board/face graphic over repeating red-and-blue “RONNIE MONTROSE” / “OPEN FIRE” text bands.

Label is the Warner Bros. “Burbank, Home of Warner Bros. Records” palm-tree scenic design.
