This is Rozhdestvensky’s CD debut of his historic Melodiya LP of Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, released in Japan in 1984 as JVC VDC-1012. It comes from the very first generation of compact discs ever manufactured in Japan—issued only two years after the CD format launched commercially in 1982. At over 40 years old and still factory sealed, surviving copies of this title are extraordinarily scarce.

This sealed copy has all correct early-1980s JVC characteristics: pre-barcode artwork, pre–heat-shrink wrapping with no linear tear strip, and the original store-applied Japanese barcode sticker. Barcodes from this period used extremely thin, tightly spaced lines—applied by retailers, not printed on the artwork—and this copy matches that format exactly. The shrink shows the expected slight cloudiness and natural micro-scuffing from four decades of storage, and the obi remains pristine and fully intact. An opened reference copy confirms period-correct JVC matrix font, booklet paper stock, and disc printing.

VDC-1012 is the first CD appearance of Rozhdestvensky’s Shostakovich Fifth — the earliest digital transfer of a performance long considered one of the great Soviet interpretations. Sealed examples of early-80s VDC titles (especially major Melodiya imports) almost never surface, making this one of the rarest archival copies available from Rozhdestvensky’s discography.

Rozhdestvensky’s Shostakovich Fifth is pure electricity — a reading that walks the tightrope between terror and triumph with impossible control. The first movement unfolds with glacial discipline, the scherzo snaps with deadpan brutality, the Largo suspends time with that unmistakable Rozh stillness, and the finale builds not to triumph but to a chilling, crushing inevitability. It remains one of the most psychologically exact and unsentimental Fifths ever recorded — the kind of interpretation collectors search for across decades.
