Gulimina Mahamutiis the first Uyghur from China to receive a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the U.S. She made her Carnegie debut in New York City at Weill Recital Hall, where she gave the U.S. premiere performance of Chen Yi’s Variations on “Awariguli” and performed Shi Fu’s Xinjiang Suite No. 2 with rave reviews.

Gulimina performed internationally in Montreal, Copenhagen, Istanbul, Budapest (at the invitation of the Turkish Ambassador), and across the U.S. and China, broadcasting on these nations’ radio and TV programs. She presented lectures on Xinjiang Piano Music from Western China at the MTNA National Conference, MTNA Webinar, and the 44th International European Piano Teachers Association (EPTA) Conference in Portugal.

During her doctoral years at UMKC Conservatory of Music, where Dr. Chen Yi teaches as a composition professor, Gulimina had opportunities to learn about Prof. Chen’s “Awariguli” in person.She gathered firsthand information and materials from the renowned Chinese composer and ethnomusicologist Shi Fu in the early 2000s when she visited and interviewed Shi Fu in his home in Beijing. Her editorial work on Shi Fu’s piano compositions was acknowledged by the distinguished Shanghai Music Publishing House (SMPH) in China. Her thesis on Shi Fu’s Three Xinjiang Piano Suites has become the main reference for Chinese and western music scholars.

As a frequent presenter of lectures, master classes, and workshops, Dr. Mahamuti performed, lectured, and gave masterclasses at universities, conservatories, and music schools across the U.S. and China.
